The VITA Project

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is a nationwide program providing free tax preparation to low-income taxpayers. The Yale chapter, based out of the New Haven Free Public Library, serves the New Haven community five days a week from January to April. Most volunteers only work a couple of hours each week, but they make a meaningful impact on the community and learn valuable skills in the process. Our mission is to put money in people’s pockets, and in 2017, our IRS-certified tax preparers helped clients file over 1,000 returns, claim over $1.68 million in refunds, and save around $200,000 in tax preparation fees.
